Field note 01
SEO and AEO are one search system.
The winning move is not optimizing for a new acronym. It is becoming the clearest, most credible answer wherever a buyer asks the question.
The position
Search has fragmented into result pages, maps, video, AI summaries, assistants and private research. The underlying job has not changed: make your expertise legible, verifiable and useful enough to earn the next question.
Stop treating AEO as a second website project.
AEO is often sold as an add-on: another list of prompts, another schema package, another layer of copy written for machines. That produces volume without authority. Search engines and answer systems still need the same fundamentals—a crawlable source, a clear entity, specific evidence and language that resolves an actual question.
The better model is one operating system. Technical SEO makes the knowledge accessible. Editorial strategy makes it worth retrieving. Structured data reduces ambiguity. Digital PR and first-hand proof create corroboration. Conversion design turns earned attention into movement. Each discipline strengthens the others.
- One canonical source for every important claim
- One measurable question behind every page
- One clear path from answer to action
Build pages around decisions, not keywords.
A keyword describes language. A decision explains why the language matters. Someone searching for an AI knowledge base may really be deciding whether their documents are ready, whether retrieval will reduce support time or whether a conventional search experience is enough. The useful page helps them make that judgment.
Start with the pressure: what is expensive, confusing or risky right now? Then expose the criteria, tradeoffs and evidence a credible advisor would use. This naturally creates the concise passages answer systems can quote while preserving the depth a human needs before contacting you.
Authority is a product of specificity.
Generic completeness is not expertise. A page can cover every subheading in a content brief and still say nothing only your team could say. Originality comes from named constraints, documented choices, real operating patterns and a willingness to explain when a solution is the wrong fit.
That means showing who created the material, why it exists, how the conclusion was reached and when it was reviewed. It also means separating measured outcomes from targets and prototypes. Precision earns trust with buyers and gives retrieval systems a cleaner signal than inflated certainty.
Measure the whole search journey.
Rankings are a diagnostic, not the business result. Watch indexed coverage, non-branded impressions, qualified landing-page sessions, assisted conversions and the questions prospects repeat in calls. For answer engines, also track cited-page referral traffic and recurring prompt themes, understanding that visibility data is still incomplete.
A strong monthly review asks three things: Are the right pages being discovered? Are they earning attention for the intended decisions? Is that attention creating useful conversations? The roadmap should change when any link in that chain is weak.
Direct answers
What people ask next.
01Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines still depend on accessible, understandable and credible source material. Technical SEO, strong information architecture and original content remain the foundation; AEO changes how that foundation is expressed and measured.
02Should every page include FAQ schema?
No. Add visible FAQs only when they resolve real buyer questions. Structured data should describe the page honestly, not manufacture relevance.
03What should a small company do first?
Fix crawlability and canonical signals, define the few decisions that drive revenue, publish the clearest first-hand answers to those decisions, and connect each answer to a useful next step.
